Do you need to delete photos?

If you want to free up space on your device while keeping your photos safe in the cloud, here’s how to do it on Android, iPhone, and your computer (Windows/Mac).

🔹 On Android (Google Photos & OneDrive Users)

If you use Google Photos or OneDrive, follow these steps to safely remove photos from your phone without deleting them from the cloud.

📸 Method 1: Free Up Space in Google Photos (Recommended)

1️⃣ Open Google Photos

2️⃣ Tap your profile icon (top-right corner)

3️⃣ Select Free up space

4️⃣ Google Photos will scan for already backed-up photos

5️⃣ Tap Delete – This will remove them from your phone only while keeping them in Google Photos

💡 This is the safest method to avoid accidental deletion from the cloud!

📂 Method 2: Manually Delete Photos from Your Device (OneDrive & Other Services)

Ensure Photos Are Backed Up First:

1️⃣ Open Google Photos or OneDrive

2️⃣ Tap your profile icon (top-right)

3️⃣ Confirm that Backup is complete

Delete Photos from Your Phone (Without Deleting from Cloud):

1️⃣ Open your Gallery/Photos app

2️⃣ Select the photos you want to remove

3️⃣ Tap Delete (or “Move to Trash”)

4️⃣ If prompted, DO NOT delete from the cloud—only from the device

💡 TIP: If your phone is still syncing, use the Google Photos "Free up space" tool instead of deleting manually to avoid syncing deletions across devices.

🔹 On iPhone (iCloud & Google Photos Users)

By default, iCloud syncs photos between your iPhone and cloud, so deleting photos from your phone will also remove them from iCloud. To delete them only from your phone while keeping them in iCloud, follow these steps:

📸 Method 1: Use "Optimize iPhone Storage" (Best for iCloud Users)

1️⃣ Open Settings

2️⃣ Tap [Your Name] → iCloud → Photos

3️⃣ Make sure iCloud Photos is ON

4️⃣ Enable "Optimize iPhone Storage"

✅ This automatically removes full-resolution photos from your phone but keeps them in iCloud while saving space on your iPhone.

📂 Method 2: Manually Delete Photos from iPhone While Keeping Them in the Cloud

If you use Google Photos instead of iCloud:

1️⃣ Open Google Photos

2️⃣ Tap your profile icon → Free up space

3️⃣ Google Photos will delete only local copies but keep them in the cloud

If you use iCloud but want to delete photos from your iPhone without affecting the cloud, follow these steps:

1️⃣ Open Photos app

2️⃣ Select photos to delete

3️⃣ Tap Share → Save to Files or Google Drive

4️⃣ Delete the photos from your iPhone after confirming the backup

🔹 On a Laptop or Desktop (Windows/Mac)

You can also delete photos from your phone remotely using your computer if they’re backed up to Google Photos, iCloud, or OneDrive.

📂 Method 1: Delete Photos from Google Photos on Your Computer (Without Losing Them in Cloud)

On Windows or Mac:

1️⃣ Go to photos.google.com

2️⃣ Check that your photos are backed up

3️⃣ Open Google Photos on your phone

4️⃣ Tap your profile icon → Free up space

5️⃣ Google Photos will delete local copies from your phone only

📂 Method 2: Delete Photos from iCloud on a Mac or Windows PC

On Mac or PC:

1️⃣ Open iCloud.com → Sign in

2️⃣ Click Photos

3️⃣ Download any photos you want to keep

4️⃣ Delete photos from your iPhone after confirming backup

Using the Photos App on Mac:

1️⃣ Open Photos app on Mac

2️⃣ Go to Preferences → iCloud

3️⃣ Check Optimize Mac Storage to save space on your computer

📌 Important Tips Before Deleting Photos

🚨 DO NOT delete photos directly from Google Photos or iCloud if sync is enabled—this will delete them from all your devices and the cloud.Always confirm your photos are backed up before deleting them from your phone.🔄 If using Google Photos, go to Settings → Free up space instead of manually deleting to prevent accidental cloud deletion.
